Picture of the Indiscriminate Interval #000005a - The Bulldog-Turtle

No time for a proper write-up, so here's a mysterious teaser. Can anyone identify the mystery skull?

Cheating, here.
Cameron's last "Picture of the Whatever" was a fossil on exhibit at the AMNH, so let's assume this one is too. Following up Max Blake's guessI found the "AMNH Novitates" number describing C. tridentata. Bad news is that the holotype doesn't seem to have a lower jaw, so it probably isn't this specimen. But the same number had a photo of the related Gamerah... I mean Stupendemys, the giant flying turtle hung from the ceiling of the ... Hall of non dinosaurian non-synapsids? ... on the fourth floor of the AMNH. (Apparently related to Caninemys.) And there is a definite resemblance to the critter in the photo.

Or is it some turtle in one of the cabinets nearby?

To wit, "Novitates" #3639, from 2009, by Meylan et al. Looking at it a bit more... The C. tri. holotype doesn't have a lower jaw, but a dentary found elsewhere might be from the same taxon, so they mated them.

And Stupendemys is apparently known only from the shell: the skull of the displayed one was modeled on... the Caninemys skull, suitably enlarged!

(And the 4th floor of the AMNH is one of my favorite places, too!)

Yep, it's from AMNH... I'm going to try and visit another major East Coast museum to mix things up a little.

Stupendemys is actually known from assorted bits and pieces of which the cervicals and humeri seem to be the best-known. Bits of femur, caudal, pelvic and pectoral girdle have shown up - why not any skulls?
